My patients who know me well have heard my house analogy to explain how I combine treatments that work together for amazing results. It’s all about understanding the source of the problem (and a little bit of facial anatomy 101).
Think of your face like a house … your skin’s surface is the outside paint job – and is the level where proven medical topicals, cosmetics, HydraFacials, laser resurfacing and Botox make all the difference. The subdermal layer is where natural fat pockets reside, sort of like insulation in the house’s walls. And then there are the deep layers of the face that extend 3-5mm under the skin’s surface. Here lie important structural collagen bands of tissue that support facial musculature giving you those beautiful, defined facial contours of your face and jawline. Because it’s the structural layer, I compare it to the house’s scaffolding.
Each one of these tissue planes needs to be addressed when combating the aging process – and each unique face will have varying degrees of need in each of these three layers. Approaching a problem in one layer with a tool that’s best for another layer will have unnatural, not to mention unsuccessful, results. I always say that trying to repair the house scaffolding by stuffing more insulation in the house wall will only produce a distorted Whoville home! Unfortunately, many famous (and not so famous) faces have not figured this out yet, resulting in overblown distorted faces that sort of resemble that Whoville house.
Topicals play the biggest role in rejuvenating and maintaining health in the paint job layer but with long-term use may even show promise at influencing collagen production in some of the deeper tissue planes. The newest peptide-based skin care can achieve terrific results – especially when combined with Ultherapy, the non-invasive way to lift and tighten the scaffolding, micro-needling like Vivace which stimulates skin’s own collagen and elastin production, and PRP.
